about

“The new album on Tru Thoughts is a major statement for the Bruk Renaissance!” Gilles Peterson
“WheelUP never misses!" Jamz Supernova (BBC 6Music)
"The epitome of the West London sound" Jaguar (BBC Radio 1)
"A fat, funky and bass-charged cut" DJ Mag

West-London producer, DJ and “bruk renaissance” torchbearer WheelUP aka Danny Wheeler follows his sophomore album ‘We Are The Magic’ with a frenzied remix of ‘Singularity’ (featuring Abacus & Steelo) from Japanese drum & bass producer Makoto.

Harking back to WheelUP’s drum & bass roots as Danny Wheeler (with releases on Far Out, Infrared Records, Liquid V and his own imprint W10 Records) ‘Singularity (Makoto Remix)’ sees legendary Hospital Records signee Makoto flip the funky bruk original, infusing it with classic DnB energy, and crisp and classy production. Talking about the remix, WheelUP adds: “Makoto has been a legend and standout producer in drum and bass from the early days with LTJ Bukem’s Good Looking Records”.

Since the release of ‘We Are The Magic’, WheelUP has done a sublime guest mix for Defected Records, a guest show on Worldwide FM, and appeared on Gilles Peterson’s flagship BBC 6 Music show, being hailed by the iconic tastemaker as part of both the “new drum and bass movement” and “bruk renaissance” – bridging together two scenes while paying homage to the pioneers before him.

WheelUP’s new record, ‘We Are The Magic,’ is built around concepts such as the law of attraction, humanitarianism, and spiritualism while adding broken beat canon and showcasing the producer's most mature and forward-thinking work to date. The LP boasts contributions and collaborations with a host of talent: Kaidi Tatham, Sam Interface, Abacus, Victoria Port (Anushka), Toya Delazy, Spaceship Coyote, Destiny Will, Brint Story, Steelo and more, and has garnered support from all corners of the jazz and electronic world, such as Jamz Supernova, DJ Mag, Jaguar and DJ Marky.

Makoto Shimizu, aka ‘Makoto’, is a testament to the international scope and power of electronic music. Born, raised and still based in Tokyo, Makoto’s career was kickstarted when he was snapped up by LTJ Bukem to release on his seminal Good Looking Records imprint in 1999. Since then, Makoto has gone on to be one of the most highly respected artists in drum and bass, pushing his unique blend of fast breaks and soul-drenched music to every corner of the globe as both a DJ and a producer. Signing exclusively to Hospital Records in 2017, Makoto is one of the most consistent artists in the D&B scene.
